December's Theme - Ice Castle

Week 1 - Ice & Snow
The science of ice and snow provides an abundance of opportunities to teach math and science to young children. Water has three states of matter: liquid, gas and solid. Children are invited to count, measure, read and wonder. How are ice and snow made? What can we do with snow? How do animals and people stay safe and warm in cold temperatures? This week of wonder invites children to discover water, temperature and the impact they have on our surrounding environment.

Week 2 - Alpine Tundra
The Alpine Tundra Ecosystem is found in mountain areas and starts at elevations around 11,000 feet. There are strong winds and cold temperatures that limit what plants can grow there. By learning about diverse ecosystems, young children begin to understand how plants and animals adapt to their natural surroundings. Many plants are dwarfed and trees exist only below the tree line. There are two types of tundra: alpine and Arctic. Animals that live in the alpine tundra have adapted to the harsh climate. Some have small ears, big feet that help them walk on snow or coats that change from brown in the summer to white in the winter. This helps hide them in the snow from predators.

Week 3 - Tundra Animals
Tundra animals have adapted to survive in the cold. From furry coats to big feet, special body parts protect and help these animals live in extreme cold temperatures, hide from predators and travel across deep snow and fragile ice. By comparing the features of tundra animals to our own bodies, young children can understand that each living creature is designed for its natural habitat.

Week 4 - Life in the Arctic
Indigenous people have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years. Explorers and researchers have traveled into the Arctic to explore its unique environment and geography. Learn how people live today in cold climates and what they need to survive. Young children will have opportunities to use critical thinking skills within a group to construct shelters and explore transportation for Arctic conditions. These activities can help children grow as they listen to others' ideas and contribute their own. Arctic Indigenous people give examples of how to live in kind and helpful communities. Saami of Finland, Chukchi in Russia, Yupik in Alaska and the Inuit in Canada and Greenland.
