January's Theme - Travel Around the World

Week 1 - Travel Tools
Learning about travel is an engaging way to explore the world without leaving the classroom. When we travel, certain items are needed, such as an airplane ticket and currency. Through hands-on activities and pretend play, children can learn about what people need in order to travel. Children can begin to narrate their own adventures. Some children may have travel experiences to build on, while others may not yet have had the opportunity. Preschool teachers can provide opportunities to pretend and explore places children may want to travel to.

Week 2 - World Market
Children may visit their local market or store, but not experience what other markets offer. It is important for children to explore a variety of items from markets around the world. This creates opportunities for children to learn about items that they might not see in their own community. By learning about goods sold in different world markets, children build vocabulary and learn about other cultures. A variety of hands-on activities help children respect cultures that are different from their own.

Week 3 - Natural Wonders
Introducing children to the natural wonders of the world sparks their natural curiosity. Through pretend travel, children can experience places beyond their own communities, helping them develop a sense of wonder and respect for the environment. Many children may not be aware of wonders such as Uluru or Victoria Falls. By exploring these extraordinary places, they begin to make sense of the world around them. These experiences not only build vocabulary but also encourage critical thinking, creativity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Week 4 - Human-Made Wonders
Human-made wonders are special places to visit and explore. Places such as Machu Picchu, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Saint Basil's Cathedral are wonderful examples of creativity, history and engineering. These wonders were built by people joining together and working hard. Learning about these structures helps young children understand the world around them. By exploring these landmarks, children can learn about different cultures, traditions and the importance of teamwork and problem solving to create something of wonder.
