June's Theme - Treasure Island

Week 1 - Setting Sail
This month's theme encourages children to think about what they already know. They may already have ideas about what belongs on an island, what you might find on a ship or what treasures can be hidden. This helps children categorize objects and concepts into meaningful groups, an important skill that allows them to make sense of the world around them. As they practice this skill, they are able to make connections, draw logical conclusions and make predictions. Teachers can support this by reading books related to islands, sailing and treasure hunting, then discussing the objects they encounter, such as boats, maps or treasure chests. They can prompt children with questions like "What might you find on a treasure island?" or "Where would a ship sail to find hidden treasure?" Teachers can also use dramatic play to help children become immersed in the world of captains, sailors or explorers to practice new vocabulary and continue to build categorization skills.

Week 2 - At the Beach
This theme is a great way to introduce fantasy and beach-themed play into your classroom. Teachers can help facilitate this type of play by thoughtfully setting up the dramatic play area with props such as shells, sand and towels for the children to explore. Through dramatic play, the children choose props and assign roles, then work through any problems that arise. This is important because it reinforces conflict resolution skills, giving the children the opportunity to collaborate and resolve their differences. For example, a conflict might occur over who will be captain of the ship. Teachers can help by suggesting strategies such as turn-taking, sharing roles or choosing new beach-themed parts to play. During these play scenarios, the children learn new vocabulary related to the beach as they practice communicating their wants and needs to their peers.

Week 3 - Exploring the Island
Children learn through exploring their environments. This includes interacting with other people and exploring objects in their surroundings. Through the activities planned, the children will have opportunities to build their imaginative skills and explore their surroundings, both indoors and outdoors, in exciting ways. For example, the children will explore pretend caves, follow treasure maps and construct waterfalls. Teachers play an important role by carefully and thoughtfully planning and setting up these experiences fore the children. During these experiences, teachers help the children discover how to use their creative ideas, collaborate with others and bring imaginary islands to life.

Week 4 - Island Fun
This month the children explore cultures, celebrations and traditions that may be different from their own. This exploration is important because cultural awareness and traditions play an important role in helping the children develop a positive sense of identity and self-esteem. As the children learn about different foods, music and dancing, they begin to develop an appreciation for the diverse ways people live and celebrate. This learning also encourages the children to reflect on their own family and traditions and cultural practices. Preschoolers are naturally interested in their similarities to and differences from others. Teachers can help nurture this curiosity by speaking openly about other cultures' similarities and differences. This openness fosters inclusivity and respect for others.
