March's Theme - Space & Sky

Week 1 - Space from Earth
The sun is the largest object in our solar system. Our planet Earth would be frozen without the sun. We need the sun to survive. Children may already have some prior knowledge of familiar objects seen in the sky and engaging in hands-on activities can help them further understand these complex scientific concepts. Children will learn to think more scientifically about the world.

Letter: Ss. Phonic Words: sun, sock, snake. Basic Concepts: star, yellow, responsible.

Star
Sun
Moon
Astronomer
Comet

Week 2 - Rock Planets
There are four different rock planets in our solar system. These "terrestrial" planets have solid surfaces, so spaceships are able to land on them. Pluto was once considered the smallest and furthest rock planet from the sun but now it is recognized only as a dwarf planet. Children will learn more about each of the four rock planets and what makes them special. When children are actively engaged in meaningful and playful activities, they can better retain and recall information.

Letter: Rr. Phonic Words: rainbow, rabbit, raccoon.

Earth
Mercury
Mars
Venus
Pluto

Week 3 - Giant Planets
There are four different giant planets in our solar system. These planets, sometimes known as jovian planets, are composed of thick, gaseous atmospheres with heavier liquid interiors and may contain ice in their makeup. Even though we are not able to land on these large, distant planets, children will have a variety of opportunities to imagine what it might be like to visit them. Children will apply math vocabulary as they compare and investigate the planets with words such as big, small, close and far.

Letter: Zz. Phonic Words: zipper, zebra, zero.

Jupitar
Uranus
Neptune
Saturn
Galaxy

Week 4 - Exploring Space
An astronaut is a person trained by a spaceflight program to lead, pilot or be a crew member of an expedition to space on a spacecraft. "Astronaut" comes from the Greek words for "star" and "sailor." It is important to give children various opportunities to engage in pretend play to experience what it might be like to have a specific job or role in the community. This week, children can experience the role of an astronaut through a variety of activities, such as eating "space food" or pretending to float in zero gravity.

Letters: Ss, Rr, Zz. Phonic Words: sun, sock, snake, rabbit, raccoon, rainbow, zipper, zebra, zero.
