May's Theme - Garden Treasures

Week 1 - Planting Gardens
Gardening is a slow process that requires time and patience. Many children want immediate gratification, but learning about gardening can help build patience and understanding. While gardening, they can participate in planting a seed and caring for it, then watching it grow. When children participate in gardening, they are learning about responsibility. They can play an important role by watering plants and making sure they get enough sunlight. Children will build on all their foundational skills, including fine motor, critical thinking, problem-solving and cooperation.

Week 2 - Growing Gardens
Gardening is a wonderful way to introduce children to the world of science. When making simple predictions and monitoring plant growth, children can participate in their own scientific process. While a plant grows, children can identify the main parts of a plant: the stem, leaves, roots and flower (if possible). Children can also begin to compare the features of plants and observe their natural environment to distinguish between plants and weeds.

Week 3 - Garden Visitors
Some animals in nature rely on plants for survival. Animals such as rabbits and moles may be pests to gardeners because they eat their crops and can create holes in the ground. This week, children will learn about the animals they may see in a garden. Children can discover how animals (even animals as small as bees) play a major role in our environment. Not only do bees produce honey, they are also the world's most important pollinator of food crops. It is estimated that one-third of the food we consume each day relies on pollination from bees.

Week 4 - Garden Vegetables
Eating vegetables is an important part of staying healthy. They are filled with vitamins, nutrients and fiber. Children may become interested in vegetables by growing their own or by simply sampling them at home or school. Vegetables are interesting to children because they come in different shapes, colors, sizes and tastes. Children can further investigate their favorite vegetable by discovering its unique features. Activities this week can further educate children on how to make healthy food choices.
