November's Theme - Explore the Rainforest
Week 1 - Floor Layer
The forest floor is the bottom layer in the rainforest. It is dark and damp. Without sunlight, most plants can't grow. However, roots and many mushrooms are still found on the forest floor, along with a thin layer of fallen leaves, seeds, fruits and branches. The forest floor is also a home to animals, such as ants and jaguars. It is important for children to be exposed to new concepts that build their knowledge and vocabulary. This week, children will learn to compare plants and animals of the rainforest with those of their own environments.
Letter: Jj. Phonic Words: jaguar, jellyfish, jar. Basic Concepts: hexagon, green, resourceful.

Week 2 - Understory Layer
The understory is a dark place with small trees and bushes. Animals such as monkeys, geckos and praying mantises travel up and down vines and branches in the understory layer. Cocoa trees grow in the shade of the understory. It is humid and damp in the understory.

Week 3 - Canopy Layer
The canopy layer is home to many animals in the rainforest. More sunlight attracts birds, bugs and plants. This layer is made up of overlapping branches and leaves. The canopy acts as a roof for the two layers below it (understory and forest floor). Some trees can grow as high as 150 feet and their leaves can look like umbrellas. Some of the animals you might find in this layer are sloths, snakes, dart frogs and parrots.
Letter: Dd. Phonic Words: dog, drum, duck.

Week 4 - Emergent Layer
The emergent layer is make up of treetops that reach higher than the canopy. These giant trees have huge mushroom-shaped crowns. The emergent layer enjoys a lot of sunshine but is exposed to high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds. Small birds and butterflies live in this layer. The emergent layer is the fourth and final layer of the rainforest. With an understanding of all four layers, children can recognize how an ecosystem is a collection of smaller parts.
