Week 1 - Down the Road
Every journey begins with knowing where to go. This week, children investigate the roads, signs, maps, bridges and service stations that help people travel from place to place. As they identify landmarks, create maps, build structures and learn about transportation systems, they develop spatial awareness and begin to understand how symbols and signs communicate important information. Opportunities to compare locations, follow routes and describe movement encourage children to strengthen problem-solving skills while using positional and directional words, such as "over," "under," "beside," "around" and "through."

Week 2 - On Land
From family cars and delivery trucks to bicycles, walking paths and riding animals, transportation on land plays an important role in daily life. Throughout the week, children investigate the many ways people travel across different distances and environments while learning about movement, safety and community. Hands-on experiences encourage children to compare transportation methods, experiment with ramps and wheels and think about how vehicles are designed for specific purposes. As they move, build, create and pretend, children develop curiosity about how transportation helps people reach the places they need to go.

 Week 3 - By Air and Water
The sky above and waterways below offer unique ways to travel. This week introduces children to airplanes, hot air balloons, hellicopters, tugboats and canoes while inviting them to investigate the forces that make movement possible. Through experiments with air, water, force and motion, children make predictions, test ideas and observe how objects float, fly, glide and move. These experiences encourage scientific thinking while helping children understand how transportation is adapted to different environments. Rich opportunities for observation and inquiry support children's growing understanding of the natural world and how people travel through it.

Week 4 - Public Transportation
Busy communities depend on transportation systems that help people travel near and far. This week focuses on trains, buses, taxis, subways and ferries, introducing children to the many ways groups of people move through cities and communities. Through discussions, dramatic play and hands-on investigations, children compare different transportation options and discover how each serves a special purpose. As they learn about routes, passengers, tracks, stations and waterways, children build on appreciation for the systems that connect people, places and communities every day.
