October's Theme - Weather & Seasons
Week 1 - Weather
As children grow, they begin to develop observational skills. Children are able to use these skills as they closely observe the outdoors, whether it be noticing the colors of the rainbow or the shape of a cloud. Playing outside, dancing with rain sticks and looking at the sky are just some of the ways children can experience weather. Learning about different types of weather allows children to look outside of themselves and investigate the world around them with their peers.

Week 2 - Seasons
Seasons are about transitions and change. Children are beginning to understand that their environment changes at certain times of the year. Even though not everyone will experience four distinct seasons, children can still understand that each season brings change. An important skill gained by exploring season is classifying and grouping objects and ideas. For example, children my explore the concept of grouping words together, such as "summer, beach, sun and flowers." Classifying is a key skill children will continue to use as they get older. When children organize objects into groups based on common characteristics, they build observations and logic skills.

Week 3 - Changes
Change can be stressful for children; therefore it is important that they learn how to anticipate, predict and adapt to changes in their surrounding environment and daily routines. Now that they've learned about weather and seasons, children have a tangible context in which they can explore the concept of change. This week, children will learn how to predict, observe, and share their findings. Topics such as leaves changing colors, help children identify differences and think about why change happens. Other natural changes include the cycle of night and day or migratory patterns.

Week 4 - Storms
Learning about stormy weather can be fun but also challenging for children who have a fear of loud noises or of the dark. During this week, children are able to talk about their fears by experiencing storms in creative ways through their five senses. Children will move like a flood, observe a "tornado" in a bottle and listen to a thunder shaker. These sensory-rich experiences help children make sense of abstract concepts related to weather.
