October's Theme - Weather & Seasons
Week 1 - Weather
Weather is always changing, giving children many opportunities to observe and wonder about the world around them. This week, children investigate the sun, wind, clouds, snow and rainbows through hands-on exploration, movement, art and simple experiments. As they watch ice melt, create wind with their breath, imagine the shapes of clouds and discover the colors of a rainbow, children strengthen their observation skills while learning about the natural world. These playful experiences encourage curiosity, scientific thinking and conversations about the weather they experience every day.

Week 2 - Seasons
Seasons are about transitions and change. Children are beginning to understand that their environment changes at certain times of the year. Living in Central NY, my students experience four distinct seasons and they understand that each season brings change. An important skill gained by exploring seasons is classifying and grouping objects and ideas. When children organize objects into groups based on common characteristics, they build observation and logic skills.

Week 3 - Changes
Changes can be stressful for children, so it is important that they learn how to anticipate, predict and adapt to changes in their surrounding environment and daily routines. Now that they've learned about weather and seasons, the children have a tangible context in which they can explore the concept of change. This week children will learn how to predict, observe and share their findings.

Week 4 - Storms
Learning about stormy weather can be fun, but also challenging for children who have a fear of loud noises or the dark. This week, children are able to talk about their fears by experiencing storms in creative ways through their five senses. These sensory-rich experiences help children make senswe of abstract concepts related to weather.
